2002-2004
The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) was an essential professional development resource when I opened my photography business in the 1990s. I volunteered as a coordinator for student engagement and membership. My association with the Austin chapter led me to my first client-centered graphic design project, a postcard for a photographer show-and-tell event.
After my move to New York City, I reached out to the organizers of the New York chapter but was ignored. It was through networking events with fellow members that I learned the leadership of the largest chapter in the country was in disarray. Additionally, the ASMP national governing body was in the process of relieving the New York City board members of their duties. During this period, I received an invitation to join the steering committee to help navigate the transition.
The photography market was experiencing a recession following the events of 9/11. I began teaching myself Adobe InDesign and Illustrator as a means of expanding my business services toward graphic design projects. I assumed the role of art director to hone my craft in creating marketing materials and developing a transitional brand identity.
